Your next customer is not scrolling through search results, they are asking an AI assistant a question. They are asking it who to trust, what to buy, and which organisation to contact. By the time they reach your website, the shortlist is often already formed.
Majority of organisations have no idea what these assistants say about them, or which competitors get recommended in their place.
We ran an experiment to find out how this actually works. This is an early pilot and the findings are directional. Here is what we learned, and what it means for how you get found.
AI assistants are becoming the front door, and authoritative sources aren't guaranteed a place in it
% of answers citing [official source]
| Query | AI Assistant A | AI Assistant B | AI Assistant C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Query 1 | 0% | 10% | 0% |
| Query 2 | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| Query 3 | 0% | 40% | 30% |
| Query 4 | 10% | 70% | 100% |
| Query 5 | 0% | 60% | 50% |
| All queries | 2% | 36% | 36% |
Most communications and marketing teams assume that if you are the official source, the authoritative body, or the primary provider, the AI will cite you. That assumption is wrong.
Across our test queries, official sources were cited far less often than you would expect. The assistants did not default to the most authoritative voice in the room. They pulled from a much wider pool. Sometimes they cited commercial sites. Sometimes they cited forums. Sometimes they cited aggregators that simply summarised the official position better than the official source did.
The gap between "being the official source" and "being the cited source" is where your visibility is won or lost.
Intent shapes sourcing
Where each assistant's citations come from
- Official
- Public
- Non-profit & academic
- Media & other
- Commercial
This was the most striking finding. The type of question determined the type of source far more than the topic did.
When we asked a process question, something like "how to ...", the assistants leaned towards methodologies and information based pages. When we asked a commercial question, something like "where can I find a ...", the answers were dominated by sellers, comparison sites, and review platforms. When we asked an open-ended question; the answers drifted into a long tail of unexpected sources, some were even international and academic.
This is the insight that should reshape your strategy. You do not need to be visible everywhere. You need to be visible in the source types that your specific question types attract. A training provider should not expect to be cited in the same places as a grant application page. A commercial service should not expect to be cited in the same places as a report.
Intent is the sorting mechanism and if you yet it wrong and you're optimisising for the wrong ecosystem entirely.
Being found isn't the same as being cited
There are two gates to pass through.
A source can appear in the search results that the assistant retrieves however that does not mean it will be cited in the answer. We saw many pages that were retrieved but never actually mentioned. They passed the first gate and failed the second.
The first gate is retrieval, it is about being discoverable. The second gate is citation, which is about being useful enough, clear enough, and structured enough that the assistant chooses to use you as the basis for its entire answer.
Most organisations track whether they appear in search results but not many track whether they are cited in the final answer.
What organisations should do to appear in more AI responses
The Daitafix loop
Measure
See which sources each assistant cites, by question type.
Diagnose
Find where you are retrieved but not cited, or missing entirely.
Fix
Make your content clearer, better structured and easier to cite.
Analyse
Assistants change constantly. Check what moved.
This is not a problem you solve once, rather, It is a cycle you run or a loop that adapts to demand.
At Daitafix, we work with organisations to build this capability. Not as a one-time audit, but as a repeatable process. The goal isn't to game the system, our goal is to help you become genuinely visible in the place where your customers are already looking.
You cannot see what AI assistants say about you until you look. We offer a free trial where you can see how major assistants currently describe and cite your organisation, and where competitors appear in your place. No commitment or obligation.
